Elizabeth Sandifer

Elizabeth Sandifer created Eruditorum Press. She’s not really sure why she did that, and she apologizes for the inconvenience. She currently writes Last War in Albion, a history of the magical war between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. She used to write TARDIS Eruditorum, a history of Britain told through the lens of a ropey sci-fi series. She also wrote Neoreaction a Basilisk, writes comics these days, and has ADHD so will probably just randomly write some other shit sooner or later. Support Elizabeth on Patreon.

I’m sure this has been asked before, but for someone who cannot read Blake’s handwriting at all, what is the best way to go about trying to read Blake?

This post has been running through my mind all day.

Well, the absolute best option is just to wait until 2017 when I start doing the annotations and then pay me a lot of money.

But if you’re impatient, and I could hardly blame you, the edition annotated by W.H. Stevenson is probably the best introductory version, and can easily be read alongside images of the plates from the Blake Archive.

Just in passing, the Bank of England has announced that JMW Turner will be on the new £20 banknote.
The Guardian newspaper noted in its comment on this that there were only three viable candidates in the field of visual arts, John Constable, William Blake and Turner, and concluded that Turner was perhaps the most “complete” of the three, providing a proper synthesis of both external observation (Constable’s genius) and internal vision (Blake.)
This is perhaps largely due to Blake’s perceived inaccessibility – as your pieces here note – and the more that can be done to break through that, the better.

“In other words, if The Four Zoas represents a failure of Blake’s vision – an inability to create a map of his own mythology that satisfied his dense and formalist instincts – it represents a triumph of Blake’s method.”

I was blown away by this statement and insight – Really loving reading the Blake pieces! Really loved the first sentence mentioning a Past War within the Last War.
