Great write-up, and I appreciate the added context lost on us English speakers reading subtitles on the Criterion Channel. Among the movies I’ve come across, only the work of Obayashi Nobuhiko (of Japanese “House” fame) shares a similar sense of energy and formal playfulness to Chytilova’s work here.
