Elizabeth Sandifer created Eruditorum Press. She’s not really sure why she did that, and she apologizes for the inconvenience. She currently writes Last War in Albion, a history of the magical war between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. She used to write TARDIS Eruditorum, a history of Britain told through the lens of a ropey sci-fi series. She also wrote Neoreaction a Basilisk, writes comics these days, and has ADHD so will probably just randomly write some other shit sooner or later. Support Elizabeth on Patreon.

Surely there’s more to say about the Mirror Master? He’s one of Morrison’s minor but enduring creations — 30 years on, he’s still the canonical version, complete with a tragic backstory that’s been added by subsequent writers. A gender-swapped version, Eva McCulloch, is currently making trouble for the Flash in the live-action TV series.

What makes Mirror Master interesting is that he’s specifically from Morrison’s home town of Glasgow. VERY specifically — to the point of using Glasgow slang that would be opaque to 99% of the comic’s readers. (“D’ya think my head buttons up the back? D’ya think I came up the Clyde on a bike?”) One might imagine he’s a Mary Sue or other self-insertion, but no. He’s not Morrison, nor very like him. Rather he’s a particular local type — a working-class local boy turned supervillain. He’s violent and dangerous, but with standards and a sentimental streak. You can imagine that young Morrison knew a lot of guys like McCulloch, and possibly got beaten up by one or two of them.

Way back when, you suggested that one difference between Moore and Morrison was localism vs. cosmopolitanism, more or less. (Maybe? It’s been a while, I might be misremembering.) But then, the occasional bits where Morrison weaves Scotland, Glasgow, and his very specific working class / Scots Labour origins into his works should be that much more noteworthy. No?

I’m viscerally unable to give a shit about Flash villains. Blame Geoff Johns.

(More seriously I’m avoiding prolepsis here. I want to let early, developing Morrison stand for themself. Evan has further appearances to make—JLA and Final Crisis at a minimum (idk if he’s in the Morrison/Millar Flash)—if I decide he’s worth more of a gander.)

So would the Joker meme be “We live in a league.”

Also, for the cover for the first issue of Justice League is really unappealing, just everyone glaring at the reader. When did Booster Gold join? He’s the character I most associate with JLI, as someone who only knows it by reputation.

I believe Booster joined around issue 5 or 6.
