She currently writes Last War in Albion, a history of the magical war between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. She used to write TARDIS Eruditorum, a history of Britain told through the lens of a ropey sci-fi series. She also wrote Neoreaction a Basilisk, writes comics these days, and has ADHD so will probably just randomly write some other shit sooner or later. Support Elizabeth on Patreon.

It seems that you have not yet read the novel? I highly recommend it. This miniseries is a pale (although fun!) shadow.

I'd say Harness is right – this is where the show really gets going. Assuming Harness sticks the landing, this is going to go down as an all-time classic in terms of BBC adaptations.

Harness deserves a lot of plaudits for managing to make the first two episodes, which are almost entirely exposition, feel largely like compelling drama and not like a flat waste of time, although it really is noticeable how different the show feels from this point on after the first two episodes.

It may be worth noting that Strange's big triumph in this (maybe his only uncomplicated triumph in the series) – the roads – arises from asking the rank and file soldiers what they need and is a thoroughly material contribution.

Not sure if this news has been covered here, but… Big Finish now apparently has access to all new series characters. Including a certain Professor Song, who will be appearing in their range shortly… 😉

Horsesands is a pretty straightforward triumph too, isn't it, albeit on a smaller scale? Very material again, but I don't know how significant that is – aren't uncomplicated triumphs usually material? I don't remember the exact words, but I vaguely recall a Churchill quotation regarding his bricklaying, about how political achievements tend to be ambiguous and ephemeral, but when you build a wall it's built.

I agree about the significance of it coming from the rank and file though.

Horsesands I think lays the first crack in the relationship between Strange and Norrell.
Maybe material is the wrong word. I mean to contrast the creation of decent quality roads with doing spectacular things in the middle of battle or similar things that would show up in names and dates history.

I took David's "material" as a tacit invocation of good old "material social progress," personally, and grinned at it.

I've not; I wiped out on the book itself a chapter or two in (the style, though clever, was making it very hard to get enough of a foothold to stay interested), and the audiobook towards the start of Part Two (I just needed a break and to listen to something else, and the break is currently on year seven).

I may go back to the book, but not until after the miniseries.

Footnote: mind you, sorting out the roads would actually be a rather Wellingtonian thing to do – he's famous for his assiduous attention to logistics.

"There’s the makings of a fascinating critique here, with the primal forces of ancient magic serving as a sort of bad social justice based primarily on the fetishization of the marginalized populations"

This is one of the things I absolutely adored about the book and the show.

“Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell” is an excellent novel, from the great writer. The genre of the novel is described as fantasy, alternative history or historical novel. But for me, this is just an amazing story that captures from the first line. Focusing primarily on the relationship of the main characters, Clark also raises such topics as the essence of “Englishness”, the line between reason and madness, cultural stereotypes associated with England. In the near future, I am going to write my paper about the importance of books in our life, you can read it at the college paper writing service Paperial, this is my service, where I help students. I think this service will be useful to you. This episode of “The Education of the Magician” is one of the best in this book, I recommend reading this book to all students who love science fiction and history, these two genres are intertwined in this book. I will be glad to hear your impressions from the book.
