Elizabeth Sandifer created Eruditorum Press. She’s not really sure why she did that, and she apologizes for the inconvenience. She currently writes Last War in Albion, a history of the magical war between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. She used to write TARDIS Eruditorum, a history of Britain told through the lens of a ropey sci-fi series. She also wrote Neoreaction a Basilisk, writes comics these days, and has ADHD so will probably just randomly write some other shit sooner or later. Support Elizabeth on Patreon.

Already the clock is counting down to when the Roose breaks loose.

Ian Hempstead Wright getting Season Five off because his plots got too far ahead from everyone else’s.

No mean achievement, given that he basically just spends two seasons walking. Admittedly, he is at least walking to get somewhere, whereas Arya just goes round in circles, before ending up where she was clearly going to end up from the end of season 2. Arguably in terms of character development, or at least maintaining sympathy, it was necessary to hold back until after the Red Wedding, rather than just have her go all Young Monty Burns straight away, but the deferment from thinking about going to Braavos at the end of season 3 to actually going at the end of season 4 is just sheer water-treading, albeit entertaining (which, as you indicate, is writ large for season 3 as a whole).

in many ways the real highlight is her scene with Joffrey, in which she becomes the first character ever to successfully play him, a phenomenon that both makes her more compelling and offers enormous promise for King’s Landing going forward.

Which of course is why it’s a tad frustrating that they spend pretty much the entire season’s King’s Landing component setting up plotlines that never happen.

      I actually did say “walking”, didn’t I? I mean…Imean…you know what I mean.

Since my previous self-replying comment here seems to have been deleted, and I didn’t delete it, can I ask whether this was a moderation action, or (since I’m not sure it ever properly appeared) if this is a new variation on the glitches in the comments system?

Not quibbling or demanding explanations if it was the former, just that it would be worth taking note of if it was the latter.

There’s been a lot of spam; I probably misclicked. Will restore.

Sometimes after I get “an error occurred” for a post, then I hit back to try again, I discover that the post has miraculously appeared anyway. What I’m saying is, I’ve probably double posted a lot. Maybe even this one, we’ll see.

Yeah, at this point I treat “an error occurred” as my confirmation message that I posted.

It’s like my site is trying to tell me something.

Oh, and a “great scene!” shout-out for Cat’s story about Jon. The definitive scene for the character, and her best. Hits right home.

Also, can you confirm or deny the dreadful suspicion that just struck me that you long ago scheduled The Player of Games post just before the start of this Brief Treatise season specifically in order to lay the groundwork for using the Full Web in the closing lines of the State of Play? I remember you saying many months ago that you were planning to fit in a couple of Culture posts before resuming the Brief Treatise, but I assumed that was just some sort of general workflow and blog-menu-variation scheduling, possibly involving a wall-chart and lots of felt-tip pens.. On the basis of a passing acquaintance with your thought-processes gleaned from reading your blog, now that I’ve thought of it this alternative explanation seems overwhelmingly plausible…

I had seen the Player of Games-Brief Treatise transition as a possibility a bit ago and liked it, since I thought Player of Games would serve as a decent way of explaining my thought process with Brief Treatise without having to do anything so crass and ugly as an explanation post.

Then I was casting about for what allusion I wanted in my cliffhanger, and Full Web narrowly edged out citing the Oblique Strategies. (Probably for S4, that.)

I don’t have too much of memory of this episode, but certainly Dormer as Margery is a highlight.
