This week I’m joined by the wonderful Anna Wiggins, known to Eruditorum Press readers for her guest posts in the Super Nintendo Project and TARDIS Eruditorum, and known to Eruditorum Press writers as the person who makes the site actually work. Anyway, we talk Before the Flood, Toby Whithouse, disability representation, Whithouse’s frequent blind spots with regards to transgender and feminist issues, and many more reasons why we just don’t like Toby Whithouse all that much. That was my thought as well, or possibly Doctor Who And The Silurians, but whilst that has a base that is under siege, it’s not the only thing going on in the plot, and the characters are not confined to the base location.

Okay, first of all, looking at the picture above, that’s definitely a penis on the back of Fisher King’s clitoral hood, hanging down from a really big nutsack.
As to the Cass/Lunn romance. First, Zaqi Ismael is a Hottie McHottie. So it makes sense in that respect. And Cass is a dynamic woman and apparently a good leader (she kept everyone alive for three days before the Doctor even showed up); she’s got her shit together, and she’s not afraid to let everyone know it. So it makes sense in that respect.
What about the fact that she has a power dynamic over him, being the base commander? That’s what we should find hinky about this setup. Well, that and the fact that O’Donnell doesn’t want to make it a threesome, because she should. (Bennett can go diddle Pritchard or something. Blecch. Ooh, maybe the Fisher King spared Bennett because the man already has the personality of a fish.)
Really, though, that there even needs to be a “romance angle” at all (for all these characters) is just so terribly clichéd, it’s like a simulacrum of drama.

It would have been nice if they’d left off the Cass/Lunn “OMG you love me too?” scene, as it was pretty obvious they both had a thing for each other without having to spell it out for us at the end.

Just to weigh in on the romance… my wife works with physically and mentally impaired students in main stream high school and occasionally university, including hearing impaired, and has done so for the past ten years. Many of the former students have remained friends into their adult life and still visit.
Her comment at the romantic revelation was in the line of, that figures, and is not uncommon in her experience, both personally and among aides and other students she works with. To the point where this year there was an mainstream male student paired with a female cerebral-palsy student to assist with her communication in class. They have both now graduated and are living together with plans of marrying.
In my wife’s experience the bond between an impaired person and their main, and sometimes only, outside of the family, conduit to the world is very close and very, very personal. To the point where a good number of her older male students have professed feelings on parting at the end of school or uni. She admits to coming close to reciprocating, not truly romantically, but a definite bond, that had circumstances (and ages) been different could have been taken further.

“Random” only works when it’s used as humor. ‘The Doctor has a teacup’ is fine, because the doctor is wacky and British and so he does. The sunglasses are a head-scratcher.
Frankly, the show is so premeditated at this point, I don’t doubt Moffat is trying to make some larger point here. Something about being a viewer and participant… smug smug clever clever etc. Who knows.

So er, Dr. Sandifer? Apologies if this has been hashed to death elsewhere, but what the heck is up with your web host? Ever since you moved away from blogspot, this site has been unreachable at least a third of the times that I’ve tried.
