//For the bourgeois commentators, the key phrase at the end of Animal Farm – “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which” – means that the communist pigs are evil, and that the new boss is the same as the old boss, //

Well it is equally the Trotskyist and anarchist critique that the Pigs/Stalinist regime was (state) capitalism. It isn’t just that Napoleon is evil but that he is imitating the humans/capitalists and has become indistinguishable from them. That Napoleon is evil has already been hammered home by Orwell.

Interesting piece, though still genuinely saddened that a big picture of Peppa Pig hasn’t headlined any of these articles!

any mention of Animal Farm would probably be mistaken for a reference to a show of the same kind in which celebrities have to win votes from the public by mucking out donkeys or milking goats or something…

It was used in an episode of Jonathan Creek as the title of a reality show in which celebrities had to actually live like pigs.

And then, because as you say, reality TV is in competition with its own parodies as to which can bring the most horrific excesses, the BBC broadcast My Life as an Animal five years later.

The show did exist. Rebecca Loos had to masturbate a pig.

“Real TV understands well that it is engaged in an insanity arms race with Charlie Brooker’s TV Go Home.”

Is it bogroll. Unless somebody has actually implemented Big Look Circus (from the 14 July 2000 bumper number of TVGH) and I just didn’t get the memo.

(Synchronicitously enough, the “would like to speak to you” small print under BLC’s write-up asks “Perhaps you’d like us to engineer an ordeal in which a pig in a Stan Laurel mask gives you a protracted browndicking while we use the global satellite network to beam your squirms of discomfort to millions of ugly gawping shits worldwide?”)

This feels relevant: I had a dream last night in which Cameron admitted to me that he had been secretly force feeding Boris Johnson to endanger his health so he couldn’t make a leadership challenge. I know we traditionally fatten calfs, but can we make an exception due to BoJo’s obviously porcine appearance?
