Elizabeth Sandifer

Elizabeth Sandifer created Eruditorum Press. She’s not really sure why she did that, and she apologizes for the inconvenience. She currently writes Last War in Albion, a history of the magical war between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. She used to write TARDIS Eruditorum, a history of Britain told through the lens of a ropey sci-fi series. She also wrote Neoreaction a Basilisk, writes comics these days, and has ADHD so will probably just randomly write some other shit sooner or later. Support Elizabeth on Patreon.

    Great podcast!

As to the writers’ room, Chibnall confirmed, while adding his bit to the oversignification of Hell Bent, that he used “a hybrid of the British and American systems”.

He talks about it here: http://cultbox.co.uk/news/doctor-who-series-11-chris-chibnall-confirms-screenwriting-is-collaborative

On the “the Doctor is now female, and doing emotional labour” bit, I’d like to repeat an observation of mine from GB about the difficulty of combating hegemony:

A succession of manly male heroes sends three interlocking messages:

    1) Heroes are men.
    2) Traditionally male characteristics are heroic.
    3) Men have traditionally male characteristics, and women have traditionally female characteristics.

You can only ever defy two of those three messages at any given moment.

(So the best you can do is keep defying two of them, and switch over which two you’re defying sometimes.)

On the whole, it seemed the Moffat years were pretty committed to defying 2 and 3, so if the Chibnall era is going to take care of 1 and 2, then at least the amalgam of this decade of Who covers them all

Honestly, between Clara, Vastra, Kate, Osgood, and most of Moffat’s other female leads, and also his persistent gender essentialism, I’d say Moffat’s era does more to challenge 1) than 3)

Thrilled these are back along with new Doctor Who. I really enjoyed the Snakedance episode of Pex Lives, too!

Thanks for doing the podcast! It’s really nice to hear that “when the world is a danger to you…” intro again 🙂

Completely unrelated: A Golden Thread arrived in the mail (as a kickstarter backer reward) and just I finished reading it. Really enjoyed it, couldn’t put it down actually. I didn’t know anything about Wonder Woman before but now I’m eager to check out some of these classic runs.

Let’s be honest, if El’s guest for the next ep isn’t a person of colour the optics of that are … um… not great.

Between the decision to minimize advance information about episodes and the realities of scheduling multiple guests, the guest/episode pairings this year are all essentially random save for an effort to evenly distribute regulars and new guests over the ten episodes.

I mean, you don’t even have to watch the episode to guess what he’ll think about it.
