Don’t look at the future. We drew something awful on it.

The idea of City as character is very interesting to me, particularly because I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We have a lot of filming for movies locally, and along my street in particular. Additionally I've spent extensive time in Vancouver. It's not uncommon to see places I recognize in films, and TV. A lot of the time I am supposed to think "Oh New York" or "Montana" when I know for a fact that the restaurant they're eating at is about a 5 minute walk from my house. I don't know what the point of this comment is…perhaps that the character of a city is always a construction even when we take for granted certain things.

Julie Gardner is also from a part of Wales. My parents never thought to tell me where she grew up, so let's Occam's Razor the question of where she's from and assume that she, like Russell T Davies and Steffan H Alun, grew up on Lôn Cae Banc.

Huh? Is this some complicated meta-point that I'm missing? Why would you "Occam's Razor the question" or assume anything when you can simply look up where she grew up? What do your parents have to do with it? All you have to do is google her and find out she grew up in Glynneath.

Well, it is, at least, a joke.

"Gardner was born in Neath, and grew up in the Pont Walby area of Glynneath where her parents ran a local shop."

Not-very-fun fact: Cardiff has been mentioned by name in seven different Doctor Who stories (five of which were in Davies' tenure).

The scorecard for other major* cities stands at: Glasgow 5, Liverpool 4, Edinburgh 1, Manchester 1, London too-many-to-count.

*In this context major means "I've heard of them". I'm probably missing a lot of significant ones. And I'm not even sure all of these are cities.

Oops. Liverpool is 5 if you count "Liverpool Street" being said in The Web of Fear.

How is it a joke? I know that explaining jokes makes them not funny, but I sincerely don't understand what the joke is supposed to be here.

Which five stories was Glasgow mentioned in? I can only think of one at the moment, although in fairness I am living up to my Glaswegian stereotype by being quite drunk.

Glasgow is mentioned in The Moonbase, Frontier in Space, The Long Game, Turn Left, and finally gets its due as a location in The Name of the Doctor.

It's not a very kind joke, so I'm not going to explain it.
