I Don’t Speak German, Episode 4 – Unite the Right, the Aftermath
In this episode, Daniel tells me about the aftermath of the disastrous Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville 2017 (which we talked about last time). We also get a tad more theoretical about some of the reasons for some of the behaviour of the so-called ‘alt-right’, and chat about some related issues such as the recent controversy concerning the Covington MAGA kids.

While I can’t honestly say I’ve been enjoying these podcasts, they have certainly been fascinating, and helpful to me personally. I still find the people under discussion extremely scary, but somehow pointing out their disharmony and the almost farcical nature of their behaviour takes the edge off it. This allows room for some actual thinking about how to deal with them rather than just feeling like running away and hiding under the bed.
I’m glad you mentioned Shaun. My son (who is more politically active than I will ever be) introduced me to his videos on YouTube last year, starting with the one about Unite the Right, and up until now that had been the source of almost everything I know about this stuff.
I am almost a week behind because I have to be in a strong enough place emotionally to be able to pay attention to what you are saying each episode. My thanks to both of you, but particularly Daniel for spending so much time wading through sewage so others don’t have to.
