Elizabeth Sandifer

Elizabeth Sandifer created Eruditorum Press. She’s not really sure why she did that, and she apologizes for the inconvenience. She currently writes Last War in Albion, a history of the magical war between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. She used to write TARDIS Eruditorum, a history of Britain told through the lens of a ropey sci-fi series. She also wrote Neoreaction a Basilisk, writes comics these days, and has ADHD so will probably just randomly write some other shit sooner or later. Support Elizabeth on Patreon.

Interesting. I completely missed the back half of Shade, for exactly the reason you pointed out last post — the Kathy rape scene. I’d been an occasional, pick-it-up reader up to that point; after that, it was a book I walked right past.

(It wasn’t just the nastiness of the rape scene, though that was certainly a thing. It was that it was telegraphed literally from the first issue. I remember reading that issue and thinking that was where this was going.)

Also, Shade was kind of obviously a writer stand-in. Like, the bit where he talks about the coat being the sort of thing he used to wear before he got old… Milligan was a decrepit 30 year old when he wrote that. More generally “alien as a commentary on the alienation and weirdness of American life” is a perfectly reasonable trope, even if it has been done a bajillion times. But somehow Shade felt, in his attitudes and his responses, specifically, like a thirtyish English dude.

Anyway: apparently I missed some interesting stuff, go figure. That said, Milligan is still a pretty minor character in the War compared to Gaiman, Ennis, Ellis, or (sigh) Millar.
