Elizabeth Sandifer created Eruditorum Press. She’s not really sure why she did that, and she apologizes for the inconvenience. She currently writes Last War in Albion, a history of the magical war between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. She used to write TARDIS Eruditorum, a history of Britain told through the lens of a ropey sci-fi series. She also wrote Neoreaction a Basilisk, writes comics these days, and has ADHD so will probably just randomly write some other shit sooner or later. Support Elizabeth on Patreon.

I’ve never finished this game, but I’m so glad it exists.
It’s not an SNES game and really has nothing to do with this project, but I just finished The Stanley Parable and I NEED your thoughts on it.

EVO is nothing to sneeze at. I remember feeling quite sophisticated playing it.

I mean, when you play a subversive game, usually it involves blood, snot, or some combination thereof. And then the disappointment of learning it was all a corporate cash-grab all along, like Earthworm Jim.

It’s pleasing to me when an auteur game manages to get mainstream notice, even if it makes concessions (the princess baloney, or Booker DeWitt’s high body count) to get published.

Somehow, against all odds, reason, and sanity a game about the evolution of human life itself collapses into a princess rescue.

I feel like you’ve missed the wood for the trees here Phil in concentrating too hard on the end being a ‘princess rescue’ as there’s something more interesting going on. I mean yes it is but at the same time Gaia is very explicitly shown to be the Earth itself. The game is the evolution of Man as he consumes anything in his path and kills his way towards seizing Earth as his prize and if that makes you feel uncomfortable, well, maybe it should and it’s a good use of the trope.
