This was actually one of the earliest Star Trek TNG stories in my memory. Your description recalled some very haunting images from a story I hadn't engaged since I was maybe eight years old. All I really remembered is being profoundly affected by what I knew to be a powerful story. And I didn't remember anything else, because my critical faculties for narratives hadn't really been developed at all. I'm not even sure if I ever made note of the author either.

It was wonderful reading about this story again.

Wow. I know I said in the last essay that it would be unlikely that I'd read the comics, well I am blown away by the sound of this and will somehow have to track it down as it sounds amazing.

"an inverse Cheshire Cat with a wicked grin; a vaguely human-shaped hole in the very fabric of reality itself, beyond which is an infinite, swirling maelstrom of cosmic wonder"

That is a great bit of writing right there Josh, and a superlative description of what Q is, something inconceivable and wonderful, and dangerous.

I remember buying comics from my local grocers as a kid too!

Thanks for the kind words, and I hope you get the chance to! This is one of the true peaks of DC's TNG book in my opinion, and well, well worth a read.

It, and all the other Trek comics published before IDW got the license, are available on this one fantastic DVD-ROM by Gitcorp:

It seems to be going for a hefty sum these days, but it's a terrific collection and I'm glad to see it's still in print. There are…other means of obtaining it as well.

Aye for sure, enjoying the blog as ever and Shabcast 2 with you and jack was great recently too.

Thanks a lot for the link to the Trek comics, I'll go check it out. Cheers.
