Elizabeth Sandifer created Eruditorum Press. She’s not really sure why she did that, and she apologizes for the inconvenience. She currently writes Last War in Albion, a history of the magical war between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. She used to write TARDIS Eruditorum, a history of Britain told through the lens of a ropey sci-fi series. She also wrote Neoreaction a Basilisk, writes comics these days, and has ADHD so will probably just randomly write some other shit sooner or later. Support Elizabeth on Patreon.

Cleganebowl unconfirmed. LSH maybe still lurking around. And the Varys bit is hugely intriguing.

I dunno how I feel about it… but let’s see how it works out.

I just assumed Varys was going to meet the Greyjoy fleet. Might be misdirection, but that seems to be where that plot is headed.

I assumed that Vary was going so he could deliver his speech from the end of ADWD.

Maybe I’m just Throned out. I’m struggling to raise my usual enthusiasm for the show each week. I really am. More than in past seasons the big surprises seem more perfunctory than dramatic or emotional, and often predictable; so predictable that most of the time I’m expecting there to be a twist in the tale… but, no, the plot strand just proceeds to its inevitable conclusion and on to the next plot point. Ticking off the points needed to reach the end game of the season.
Never has the series’ inner workings been so on display. The cogs are almost visible under the set dressing.

I loathe writing this. I love the show, even in its previous darkest days it was never less than entertaining. But Tyrion and Varys have been so underwhelming they could have been left out. Even Tyrion’s wine-and-joke scene did nothing but use up some screen time for the actors to remind us they were there and that Tyrion is an alcoholic. Where is the Tyrion from the early seasons? If Tyrion is bumped off now I don’t think I’d even bat an eyelid; at the end of Season 4 I’d have slashed my wrists!

And for the third time in a row Danny makes a dramatic gesture; look she’s killed all the misogynists and walked out of the fire, look she’s riding a dragon and being badass, look she’s ridden a dragon to the pyramid in the nick of time and made a grand entrance…. and each time done… precisely nothing. The wife and I have completely lost any interest in or sympathy for Danny’s journey, she’s also our last choice for the throne… she’s a borderline psychotic!

Arya? Her behaviour prior to and during the bridge stabbing was so out of character I was sure it was a ruse. It has to be a ruse, doesn’t it? She’s hiding from the Faceless Men and the Waif by swanning around the city without a care in the world, then stopping in the open to gaze at the wonder of nature, then getting stabbed like a dear in the headlights. After the last episode there were theories galore about the scene (it wasn’t Arya) because it couldn’t be so crap. Well, guess it actually was that crap! An abdominal stab wound of that severity, with a blade (from checking the freeze-frame) around eight inches in length slashing and then penetrating to the hilt twice and twisted, by a trained assassin… and she fights back, swims away and walks to the theater… and survives. No bleeding out, septicemia, peritonitis, penetration of the bowel? Then enough strength to run and fight again, what, a day layer, two at most. Just bad writing. Let there be a twist. Please, let there be a twist.

I think it’s left vague how long Arya spends recuperating, and ancient medicine (basically opium, poultices, healthy food and rest) could be surprisingly effective at dealing with stab wounds.

Well, I hope the money they saved on fight choreography for the Blackfish’s death (and the make-up work for not even showing a body) & the Ayra/Waif fight as well as the stunt work for Lady Crane’s death and the CG savings from Daenerys off screen arrival gets put to good use next week…

Hmm. I actually think it worked well, but that might be a sort of mental overcorrection–Xfinity kept crashing on me and I took a few breaks to go back to the kitchen (first to take the roast out of the oven and cut myself a small piece… then back for another small piece… and then another… and another… I’m quite pleased with how it turned out), so I may be subconsciously crediting any disjointedness to my viewing and thereby not attributing it to the episode.

But the chase sequence with Arya was fantastic, and her declaration of her intent to return home much-needed, the Hound continues to be an endlessly entertaining bastard and I can’t wait for him to join the Queen in the North’s army, and Jaime and Brienne got some excellent scenes. So I’m pretty pleased going into the ninth episode.

Refresh my memory: did Berold need a priest to revive him again after the Hound killed him, or was the one revival enough to cause him to come back on his own the second time? Because if the latter, his presence may be foreshadowing that Jon dies fighting Ramsay, only to get back up again.

Thoros does revive Beric after he’s killed by the Hound, yes.
