The Eruditorum Press Doctor Who Poll Results: The One Point Club
Today we get the vast swath of the list that clocked in at exactly one point. The overwhelming majority of these are things that got exactly one vote, and indeed one vote off of the non-televised section. Indeed, if you want to jump straight to televised stuff, skip ahead to 382nd place. Also, I should admit that my tie-breaking ranking in these lower recesses of the charts is less careful than my adjudication of the larger extremes, generally based on mild whimsy. Which also brings us to the one tie of the poll – the one point non-televised stories that I was sufficiently unfamiliar with or indifferent to that I had no views whatsoever on what their order should be. But before that we have a one point non-televised story that I felt strongly should come in below all of them.
626: Death Comes to Time (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
Yes, yes. I wish you’d thought to downvote it too. Which brings us to our tie.
507: 118-Way Tie (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
That’s a tie among A Good Dalek, A Groatsworth of Wit, A Problem of Background by Lyricwritesprose, Almost Perfect, Beautiful Freak, Born again, Boxing Day, Brave New Town, Children of the Revolution, City of the Damned, Cloud of Fear, Corner of the Eye, Cradle of the Snake, Crusade, Dead of Winter, Death And The Queen, Death Takes a Holiday, Death’s Deal, Deep Time, Devious, Doctor Who Quiz Book of Dinosaurs, Dreams of Empire, Ecce Medicus Donnaque!, Fade Away, Fall to Earth, Flight of the Darned, Gods and Monsters, Grand Theft Cosmos, Ground Zero, Hiccups, Jago & Litefoot: Beautiful Things , Kingdom of Silver/Keepsake, Lies Told to Children, Master of Spiders, Night of the Whisper, Night Thoughts, Nothing at the End of the Lane, Now or Therabouts, Oblivion, Only the Monstrous, Outrage of the Zygons, Paper Cuts, People Used to Dream About the Future, Picnic at Asgard, Pitter-Patter, Pull to Open, Pureblood, Revolution Man, Rise and Fall, Robot Gladiators (The K-9 series’ only appearance in the poll), Second Chances, See Ye Not That Bonny Road, Sisters of the Flame/ Vengeance of Morbius, Son Of The Dragon, Space in Dimensions Relative and Time, Survival of the Fittest, Technophobia, Terry Nation’s Dalek comics, That video of Phil playing Soldeed that was offered as a Kickstarter bonus, The 12 Doctors Play DDR, The Auton Stratagem, The Autonomy Bug, The Brood of Erys, The Claws of Santa, The Crossroads of Time, The Crystal Conundrum, The Cybermen, The Dalek Chronicles, The Dalek Factor, The Death of Death, The Demons of Red Lodge and Other Stories, The Doctor and the Dalek, The Doctor Trap, The Doomwood Curse, The Eleven, The Eleven-Day Empire / The Shadow Play, The Eleventh Doctor: Conversion, The Elixir of Doom, The End of the World (the Big Finish story, as opposed to the television one), The Golden Ones, The Hero of Three Faces, The House of the Dead, The Indestructible Man, The Last, The Last Day, The Last Dodo, The Last Post, The Lost Ones, The Monsters Inside, The Nameless City, The Never Was, The Pair o’ Docs Paradox, The Reaping, The Resurrection Casket, The Scapegoat, The Shadow Planet, The Ship of a Billion Years, The Sleep of Reason, The Sontaran Ordeal, The Stalker of Norfolk, The Stockbridge Showdown, The Tomorrow Windows, Infernal Devices, The Way through the Woods, The Weeping Angels of Mons, The Widow’s Assassin, The Worlds of Doctor Who, Things They Talked About in the Playground, Time Reaver, Trading Futures, Twice Upon a Timelord, UNIT: Extinction, Urgent Calls, Valhalla, Vampire of the Mind, We Are The Daleks, Wirrn Isle, and Yellow Fever And How to Cure It. As you’ve noticed, I’m not linking those for you.

505: The Silent Stars Go By (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
504: The Death of Art (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
503: Tomb of Valdemar (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)

486: A Thousand Tiny Wings (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
485: Wonderland (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
484: Absence of the Daleks (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
That’d be the draft of Dalek that featured the Toclafarne because the rights to the Daleks had fallen through. So presumably this ballot was either Rob Shearman or Russell T Davies, as not many other people have read it.
483: Craig Ferguson’s lyrics to the Doctor Who theme (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
482: The Time of the Daleks (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)

448: The Algebra of Ice (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
447: Doctor Who and the Doomsday Weapon (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
Mind you, the voter didn’t like it enough to get the title right.
446: Black Legacy (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
445: Full Fathom Five (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
444: 101 Claras to See (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
443: Doctor Who and the Auton Invasion (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
442: The Dark Path (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
441: The Time War Summary from the 2006 Doctor Who Annual (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
440: Eye of Heaven (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)

435: Doctor Who and the Crusaders (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
434: Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised)
And now, at long last, we move on to things that a single person used their regular votes for as opposed to their non-televised votes for.
433: Operating Table (1 Point)
432: Iron Sky (1 Point)
431: Fallout (1 Point)
430: Demons and Angels (1 Point)
Yet another case of “if you’re going to vote for something obscure that’s not even Doctor Who could you get the damn title right?”
429: Emergency Powers (1 Point)
The vote also noted that they were the author of this fanfic, and inquired if I want to fight about it. Nah. I’ll just put it immediately behind a crap Big Finish
428: Embrace the Darkness (1 Point)
427: A Happy Ending (1 Point)
426: Cat’s Cradle: Time’s Crucible (1 Point)
425: The Stream of Anagrams (1 Point)
424: Time Enough for War (1 Point)
423: Warchild (1 Point)
422: The Eternal Summer (1 Point)
421: Living Legend (1 Point)
420: Goth Opera (1 Point)
419: Antidote to Oblivion (1 Point)
418: Citadel of Dreams (1 Point)
417: Blue Forgotten Planet (1 Point)
416: Children of Seth (1 Point)
The funniest case of “get the damn name right” yet, as the voter put in Children of Earth, but specified the Big Finish story.
415: Death in Blackpool (1 Point)
414: Jago & Lightfoot & Strax: The Haunting (1 Point)
413: Friend from the Future (1 Point)
412: Trial of the Valeyard (1 Point)
411: The Company of Friends (1 Point)
410: Destiny of the Doctors (1 Point)
409: The Tom Baker Idents from BBC2’s 1999 Doctor Who Night (1 Point)
408: Warring States (1 Point)
407: The Juggernauts (1 Point)
406: History 101 (1 Point)
405: The Banquo Legacy (1 Point)
404: The Old Man and the Police Box (1 Point)
That’d be the contents of the Doctor’s Journal of Impossible Things in the original novel of Human Nature.
403: The Nightmare Man (1 Point)
402: Dead Man Walking (1 Point)
401: Death is the Only Answer (1 Point)
400: The Scorchies (1 Point)
399: The Face of the Enemy (1 Point)
398: 1963: Fanfare for the Common Men (1 Point)
397: Heroes of Sontar (1 Point)
396: Restoration (1 Point)
395: Fellow Travellers (1 Point)
394: Good as Gold (1 Point)
393: Adam (1 Point)
392: Sleeper (1 Point)
391: The Guardian of the Solar System (1 Point)
390: End of Days (1 Point)
389: Meat (1 Point)
388: Bang-Bang-a-Boom (1 Point)
387: The Pilot episode (1 Point)
386: Enemy of the Bane (1 Point)
385: UnXpected (1 Point)
384: We’re All Stories in the End (The Mind Robber) (1 Point)
I wonder why I didn’t merge all the votes for TARDIS Eruditorum into one so I’d have a better ranking.
383: Pond Life (1 Point)
And at long last we get to the televised stories, specifically ones that someone liked and nobody hated.
382: Mission to the Unknown (1 Point)
381: The Highlanders (1 Point)
380: Galaxy 4 (1 Point)
379: Planet of Giants (1 Point)
378: The Awakening (1 Point)
377: The Crusade (1 Point)
376: The Ice Warriors (1 Point)
Wasn’t that a nice break? Now back to stuff that I have to go find links for.
375: Neverland (1 Point, 2 Non-Televised, 1 Downvote)
374: Hornets’ Nest (1 Point, 2 Non-Televised, 1 Downvote)
No, you’re not hallucinating – this was among the 0 pointers yesterday, but I discovered a vote for a specific installment of it as well, so now it’s here instead.
373: Zagreus (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised, 1 Downvote)
372: Countrycide (1 Point, 1 Non-Televised, 1 Downvote)
Yes, you’re reading that correctly. Not only did two people vote for “Countrycide,” one of them used a standard slot for it. I hope it made them happy.
371: Independence Day (1 Point, 1 Downvote)
And back to television, this time for the one point Marmite club, in increasing order of controversy.
370: The Sontaran Experiment (1 Point, 1 Downvote)
369: The Moonbase (1 Point, 1 Downvote)
368: Cold War (1 Point, 3 Downvotes)
367: Closing Time (1 Point, 3 Downvotes)
366: Robot of Sherwood (1 Point, 1 Last Place, 1 Downvote)
365: The Invasion of Time (1 Point, 5 Downvotes)
364: Delta and the Bannermen (1 Point, 1 Last Place, 8 Downvotes)
And that’s us for today. Back tomorrow with a big chunk of stories as I get us to the doorstep of the Top 200.
October 4, 2016 @ 9:21 am
“Robot fo Sherwood”? Could you get the damn name right?
(Hoping this was a trap, actually. I’ve jumped in with a glad heart.)
October 4, 2016 @ 11:17 am
Yes, well, my apologies to anyone who had to spend a while Googling to figure out what that story was.
October 4, 2016 @ 10:04 am
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
Now why didn’t I think of that? Yes, I know, because I have a pathetically linear, pedestrian mind, thanks for pointing that out.
Baffled why someone thinks of Demons and Angels as a Doctor Who episode though. I mean, if you’re going to put a Red Dwarf episode, why not Meltdown or The Inquisitor?
October 4, 2016 @ 10:20 am
Actually, the more I think about it, the more exactly Meltdown seems to fit as Dwarf-does-Who. Almost starting to wish I’d put that down too.
October 4, 2016 @ 10:26 am
Hang on, maybe that voter actually meant Meltdown. If they misremembered the title, maybe they misremembered which episode it pertained to as well. It could plausibly be applied to Meltdown, with its cast of Heroes and Villains.
October 4, 2016 @ 10:27 am
The TARDIS makes an appearance in the background of Demons and Angels, which is presumably why it got a vote (similarly Iron Sky and, I’m guessing, Fallout).
October 4, 2016 @ 10:29 am
Ah, thanks. Shame though, I was getting a head of steam up there.
October 4, 2016 @ 10:57 am
Given the way things are done on this site, I would think your explanation can be assigned a greater truth value than the “real” one.
October 4, 2016 @ 1:22 pm
As the person who voted for Demons and Angels, I agree.
Meltdown is now an Auton story.
October 4, 2016 @ 2:13 pm
Does that mean the first episode of Chelmsford 123 is yet to come?
October 5, 2016 @ 11:04 am
I’m starting to wish I voted for That Justice League Story Where Batman Keeps A Dalek Casing In The Batcave…
October 4, 2016 @ 10:29 am
Angels and Demons features a brief shot of a TARDIS (or at least a Police Box) on board Red Dwarf.
October 4, 2016 @ 1:57 pm
I actually DID think of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective agency for my last, unused non-televised slot, but decided against it for reasons I no longer recall.
October 4, 2016 @ 10:40 am
“Yeah, I’ll use my non-televised story slots almost exclusively for lyricwritesprose fic, thus pointing folks towards some great stuff and creating more appreciation for–”
Phil lumps all my votes into one unreadable paragraph
Ah. Well then.
October 4, 2016 @ 11:30 am
Not all of them.
October 4, 2016 @ 1:07 pm
It figures the one whose name I always forget is also the one that made it out. Glad to see “Dragons of the Mind” get some love.
October 4, 2016 @ 6:19 pm
Having gone through each one and finding links for most of them, only 3 of her’s are on that tie.
October 4, 2016 @ 7:43 pm
Yeah–the fourth, as mentioned, is “Dragons of the Mind”.
October 4, 2016 @ 3:56 pm
My offer of fisticuffs got me out of the unreadable paragraph! Note to self: challenge more folks to fights
October 4, 2016 @ 4:04 pm
Nah, the fact that you used a regular slot for it and not a non-televised slot did.
October 4, 2016 @ 6:20 pm
I’m pretty sure one of them’s The Crusade.
October 5, 2016 @ 2:17 pm
Well, so long as I’m ahead of Chibnall, that’s the main thing! 🙂
October 4, 2016 @ 11:28 am
Ooh, I think that was me for Hornets’ Nest – I’m reasonably sure I specified The Stuff of Nightmares…
And Invasion of Time was definitely one of my regular votes – it’s Doctor Who’s Hamlet and I’ll fight any of you muthas who disagrees with me on this.
October 4, 2016 @ 11:29 am
I thought more people would like Cradle of the Snake (rather than just me) and that many more people than me would despise Countrycide (I downvoted it because it’s a fucking hate crime; Earthshock was my Last Place).
October 4, 2016 @ 11:40 am
Featuring many of my votes. I think.
Well, featuring some Big Finish I imagine I’m responsible for putting here, and lots I’m not.
October 4, 2016 @ 11:53 am
Someone voted for Outrage Of The Zygons and I think I love them for it. For the uninitiated, that’s a fan comic featuring the Sixth Doctor and Mel vs Zygons and another renegade Time Lord. Oh, and it’s a crossover with Jem and the Holograms. Yep.
October 4, 2016 @ 6:20 pm
MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
October 4, 2016 @ 12:49 pm
I don’t regret not voting for it, and I wouldn’t have anyways, but it only just now occurs to me that I could have voted for my own Doctor Who book on this list XD. Alas, no one else thought of it either.
But hey, 101 Claras made it!
October 4, 2016 @ 1:25 pm
I was so proud when I saw that! But yeah also didn’t occur to me that it could be voted for…
October 4, 2016 @ 12:52 pm
Poor Delta. I was hoping this would be the one poll it would ever get a good placement in.
October 4, 2016 @ 3:33 pm
Well, for Delta, that kind of is a good placement.
October 4, 2016 @ 1:01 pm
“Trading Futures” by Lance Parkin (novel) was my vote, and I considered using my 5-pointer on it (before going with “Snakedance”). Politically it’s Jack Graham bait, as intelligently anti-capitalist as “the Sunmakers”. Plot-wise it’s a brilliant thriller of the many-different-genuinely-clever-people-plotting-at-once style: Anji Kapoor gets several fantastic scenes, and Fitz Kreiner saves the earth all by himself (in a stumbling Fitz/ Arthur Dent-ish way) as one minor subplot.
I’m not even sure I’ve seen Russell Davies juggle that many balls in the air, but at any rate Davies doesn’t care if he drops them. Parkin has everything pile into everything else, and resolves it sensibly. It’s a feat.
October 4, 2016 @ 1:02 pm
Delta and the Bannermen’s very divisive it seems. Curious how the votes will look for Paradise Towers
Invasion of Time, though also divisive, did better than I would have expected given that I can’t seem to recall anybody saying much of anything positive about it offhand. Though of course it could just be that I haven’t happened to have seen such and there’s more than I assume
October 4, 2016 @ 1:16 pm
I rated the various Who stories on a quick 1-10 scale as I watched them; a lot of the double-titled New Who stories got very divided ratings (e.g. 8/4 for “Aliens of London/ World War III”), but I rarely felt the old show’s stories rose and fell so far. However, I did employ a split 7/2 rating for “the Invasion of Time”/ “Oh, Look, Sontarans”. I can understand the upvotes from anyone thinking of it that way.
October 4, 2016 @ 1:02 pm
A Natural History of Fear belongs at least at 436, as it’s certainly the one Big Finish that I would enthusiastically recommend to Jack Graham.
October 4, 2016 @ 1:51 pm
Whoops. That’s actually an error – it had two slots in the spreadsheet that didn’t get merged. I’ve corrected its tally.
Which I guess means it’s time to admit that there are a couple other results in here that are the product of my noticing a duplicate entry or a completely made-up title after I’d already started posting results and slipping in an innocuous non-televised story that everyone would shrug at and go “yeah, I can believe that got exactly one vote.”
October 4, 2016 @ 1:11 pm
“The Tomorrow Windows” by Jonathan Morris (novel) was also my vote. The first half was amusing but seemed inconsequential: a sweetly ropey tribute to “Hitchhiker’s Guide” by a talented yet far-from-Douglas writer.
But the second half, as piece after piece falls into place, reveals the book as
(1) Even cleverer than “Blink” (which hadn’t come along yet) on the timey-wimey front,
(2) a much smarter and more scabrous attack on capitalism and colonialism than it seemed at first, and
(3) one of the sharper takes on geek dating and Nice Guys to sneak into the Who legacy.
While also finding room for better jokes than I’d come to expect. Morris isn’t Douglas Adams, and the book gets genuinely great when it becomes clear that wasn’t the point after all.
October 4, 2016 @ 2:01 pm
Absence of the Daleks was me, actually. Based purely on the title and that one comment Gareth Roberts made about it on TARDIS Eruditorum.
The other one I voted for based purely on the title was The Death of Death, a fanfic that exists solely as a godawful elevator pitch inside my own head: “The Doctor and Jesus vs. Cthulhu.”
October 4, 2016 @ 2:07 pm
You’re lucky I didn’t scrub the 121-way tie for non-existent stories.
October 4, 2016 @ 6:51 pm
I didn’t know those weren’t allowed. Kind of assumed they WOULD be allowed, given the general EP aesthetic. Apologies.
October 4, 2016 @ 7:06 pm
It’s really just that there was an entire ballot of joke titles that I invalidated, but only after the titles had gotten mixed into my master list, so anything that appeared not to exist when I was finding links I removed on the assumption that it was from that ballot.
October 4, 2016 @ 3:19 pm
The idea that RTD was voting in this poll was lovely; I started wondering what would be on his ballot, but I’m sure it would consist solely of obscure things I have no idea about, possibly some Moffat episodes.
October 4, 2016 @ 6:07 pm
Dang. Maybe it was Steven Moffat who downvoted Chris Chibnall?
October 4, 2016 @ 4:15 pm
I’ve got 3 votes on this list. I voted for ‘Brave New Town’ and ‘Sisters of the Flame/Vengeance of Morbius’, both in the massive paragraph making up number 507 and I was one of the two people who voted for ‘To the Death’ and are wondering who on Earth downvoted it. So now you know who to thank/blame for that.
October 4, 2016 @ 4:24 pm
Oh balls, there were two solo votes for To the Death. FFS. /edits a bunch
October 4, 2016 @ 6:13 pm

The vote for “Crusade” was made with a non-televised slot, btw, so can’t be counted for The Crusade.
October 4, 2016 @ 6:30 pm
I’ll take that Solleed video you promised to the kickstarter backers as payment.
Apparently this is the link to A Good Dalek (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10672715/1/A-Good-Dalek). Also I don’t think Now or Thereabouts is a thing that exists, anyone willing to explain what that is?
October 4, 2016 @ 6:35 pm
It’s a Faction Paradox short story in Romance in Twelve Parts. N00b.

So for a second I thought it would be interesting to see if any of the spin-offs I voted for were in the one-point club. And the answer, of course, is “I don’t know”.
I don’t regret my “vote on instinct” policy, but I’m starting to wish I’d kept notes…
October 5, 2016 @ 2:23 pm
You and me both, kid.
October 5, 2016 @ 2:19 pm
What? I’m the only person to vote for the Dalek Chronicles! But.. but… the golden Emperor Dalek! Best Dalek ever. And the sumptuous beautiful artwork. Sigh…
October 5, 2016 @ 2:25 pm
When Richard Jennings was on art, definitely – I’m not so sure about Ron Turner. The only two reasons I didn’t vote for it were (1) I didn’t think of it, and (2) there’s just so much to vote for, darnit!
October 6, 2016 @ 12:51 am
It’s highly unlikely that I will regret anything about this poll more than not voting for the Craig Ferguson Doctor Who lyrics.
Also seeing Closing Time here reminds me I should have downvoted The Lodger, which is weird because surely that should have happened when I voted for it, or at least strongly considered it. I didn’t write down my list.
October 6, 2016 @ 5:05 pm
I was the one who voted for the Craig Ferguson Doctor Who Lyrics and I was genuinely surprised that I was the only one. Glad to know there’s at least one blood-sibling out there.
October 7, 2016 @ 2:15 pm
I didn’t think about voting for non-Doctor Who stories or it would have been the first thing i voted for. I’m surprised more people didn’t vote for it as well, I can only assume they hadn’t heard it.
October 7, 2016 @ 5:00 pm
Next time Phil does this, it’ll have at least two!
October 8, 2016 @ 11:40 pm
Perhaps they voted based primarily on the title? That pun is by far the best thing about it.
