Elizabeth Sandifer created Eruditorum Press. She’s not really sure why she did that, and she apologizes for the inconvenience. She currently writes Last War in Albion, a history of the magical war between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. She used to write TARDIS Eruditorum, a history of Britain told through the lens of a ropey sci-fi series. She also wrote Neoreaction a Basilisk, writes comics these days, and has ADHD so will probably just randomly write some other shit sooner or later. Support Elizabeth on Patreon.

If I were to take a wild guess given your Twitter, would one of those five weeks be A Brother to Dragons?

Literally not a word of that chapter is written yet. I’m not touching it til McCoy isn’t hanging over my head.

I think the stag is a guide (you can pick your poison on whether it’s an entity with agency, or a psychic construct) that is meant to show Will the most direct path into understanding Hannibal’s psyche. This is maybe the best explanation of why it seemingly drives Will into danger, or otherwise acts against Will’s well being. Will unconsciously summoned it to lead him through the woods.

In this ep, you have Will performing a ritualistic hunt to purge it, since at this point he has the hubris of feeling he knows enough about Hannibal to predict his actions. At the end, the stag serves as a mockery at Will’s own attempts at banishing it.

This makes the Stag-thing’s reappearance next season at the chapel in Palermo, all the more horrifying for Will. It’s no coincidence, though, that it spurs him to try and understand Hannibal further by going to his ancestral home instead of kicking around in Italy.

For all that I agree that killing characters is usually the least interesting things you can do with them, the fact that everyone except Abigail survived this season’s cliffhanger was my biggest disappointment with “Hannibal”. It was like Russel T Davies revisiting the Bad Wolf Bay scene from “Doomsday” in “Journey’s End”: stripping an otherwise powerful scene of its power. At least “Hannibal” then builds upon the notion of these characters being transformed by their mutilation.
